1 Cor 9; 16 – 19, 22b-27 (Jesuit feast day reading)

If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.

For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them.

To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.

In the Service of Justice

Today is the feast of the Spanish Jesuit priest, Peter Claver, patron of the missions to African peoples and defender of human rights: the Apostle of Cartagena. His great faith did charitable justice. For him black lives did not just matter: they were essential to the building of the Kingdom. For Peter, people of color were his brothers and sisters. He defended their civil rights and their Christian rights.

Like St. Paul in today’s Corinthians reading, who surrendered his liberty to be a slave to the gospel, Peter Claver also sacrificed his freedom by becoming a slave to slaves. This he did in the service of justice, to spread the Good News that Jesus is Lord and Savior of all people. In a world that so highly values liberty, are we as Christians willing to give up even our freedom to insure liberty and justice and salvation for all?

Prayer

Take Lord receive, all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, my entire will, all that I have and possess. Dispose of them only according to your will. Give me your love and Your grace; this is enough for me. Amen.

1 Kor 9; 16 – 19, 22b-27 (Ġiżwiti-festa qari)

Jekk I jipproklama l-Evanġelju, dan jagħti me ebda raġuni għal boasting, għal obbligu hija stabbilita fuqi, u woe lili jekk jien ma jipproklama l-Evanġelju! Għax jekk nagħmel dan ta rieda tiegħi stess, I jkollhom premju; imma jekk le ta rieda tiegħi stess, I am inkarigat minn kummissjoni. X’inhu allura huwa premju tiegħi? Biss dan: li fl-proklama tiegħi I jistgħu jagħmlu l-Evanġelju b’xejn, sabiex ma jagħmlu użu sħiħ tad-drittijiet tiegħi fil-Evanġelju.

Għal għalkemm I am ħielsa fir-rigward ta kollox, I għamlu myself skjav għal kulħadd, I hekk li tista’ tirbaħ aktar minnhom.

Lill-persuni dgħajfa sirt dgħajfa, I hekk li jista jirbaħ l-dgħajfa. I saru l-affarijiet għall-poplu kollu, li I jistgħu bil-mezzi kollha jiffrankaw xi. I do dan kollu għall-fini ta l-Evanġelju, sabiex I jista’ jgawdi minn tberik tagħha.

Inti ma taf li f’tellieqa-runners kollha jikkompetu, iżda wieħed biss jirċievi l-premju? Mexxi b’tali mod li inti tista tirbaħ dan. Atleti teżerċita awto-kontroll fl-affarijiet kollha; huma jagħmlu dan li jirċievu girlanda li jitħassru, imma aħna waħda imperishable. So I ma run aimlessly, lanqas nista kaxxa bħallikieku swat l-arja; imma jien jikkastigaw ġisem tiegħi u enslave dan, hekk li wara proklamazzjoni lill-oħrajn I myself m’għandhomx ikunu skwalifikati.

Fis-Servizz tal-Ġustizzja

Illum hija l-festa tal-qassis Spanjol Ġiżwiti, Peter Claver, patrun ta l-missjonijiet popli Afrikani u difensur tad-drittijiet tal-bniedem: l-Appostlu ta’ Cartagena. fidi kbira tiegħu ma ġustizzja karità. Għalih ħajja iswed ma biss kwistjoni: dawn kienu indispensabbli għall-bini tar-Renju. Peter, in-nies ta kulur kienu ħutu subien u bniet. Huwa difiżi d-drittijiet ċivili tagħhom u d-drittijiet Christian tagħhom.

Bħal San Pawl fil Korintin qari tal-lum, li konsenjata libertà tiegħu li jkun iskjavi għall-Evanġelju, Peter Claver sagrifikati wkoll il-libertà tiegħu billi ssir skjav skjavi. Dan huwa ma fis-servizz tal-ġustizzja, biex inxerrdu l-Aħbar it-Tajba li Ġesù hu Mulej u Salvatur tal-poplu kollu. F’dinja li hekk ħafna valuri libertà, aħna bħala nsara lesti li jċedu anki libertà tagħna biex jiġu assigurati libertà u l-ġustizzja u salvazzjoni għal kulħadd?

talb

Ħu Mulej jirċievu, kollha libertà tiegħi, memorja tiegħi, fehim tiegħi, se kollu tiegħi, dak kollu li għandi u jippossjedu. Jiddisponu minnhom biss skond rieda tiegħek. Give me imħabba tiegħek u l-grazzja tiegħek; dan huwa biżżejjed għalija. Amen.
