St. John the Apostle
John_Evangelist
St. John was probably the youngest of the Apostles of Jesus Christ and the one who is referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved.” He was the only Apostle who was at the foot of the Cross, along with the Blessed Mother, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. The others had abandoned Jesus after His arrest because they were afraid.

While hanging on the Cross, Jesus, seeing His beloved disciple John standing there, said to His mother, woman, here is your son.” Then to John He said, Here is your mother.” The Scriptures say from that day forward John took the Blessed Mother into his home (Jn 19:25).

When Mary Magdalene reported to the disciples that she had seen the risen Christ, John and Peter ran to the tomb. Although John outran Peter and arrived there first, he waited for Peter to go in out of respect for Peter’s primacy. After all, the Lord had appointed Peter the head of His Church (Mt 16:18). When John did enter the empty tomb and saw that Jesus was not there, he believed that He had risen from the dead.

Tradition tells us that John outlived all the other Apostles and was the bishop of Ephesus. While we cannot be absolutely certain that he wrote the Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation, this is the tradition that has been handed down to us and most certainly seems likely.

Lessons

In the Scriptures, Jesus once referred to John and his brother, James, who was also an Apostle, as the Sons of Thunder. Most likely Jesus said this in reference to their rash statements or quick tempers. After spending three years with the Lord, however, John seemed to have lost most of that rashness and pridefulness, and had become quite humble. One example of his humility is when he waited for Peter to enter the tomb before him.

Prayer

St. John, beloved disciple of Jesus, pray for us to be docile to those whom the Lord has put in authority over us, yet zealous in our love and service to God. In Jesus Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

San Ġwann Appostlu
John_Evangelist
San Ġwann kien probabbilment l-iżgħar minn l-Appostli ta Ġesù Kristu u l-wieħed li huwa msemmi bħala ““l-dixxiplu li kien iħobb Ġesù.”” Hu kien l-uniku Appostlu li kien fil-qiegħ tas-Salib, flimkien ma’ l-Omm Beatu, Marija, ta Kleofa, u Marija ta’ Magdala. L-oħrajn kienu abbandunati Ġesù wara l-arrest tiegħu għaliex kienu jibżgħu.

Filwaqt mdendlin fuq is-salib, Ġesù, jaraw dixxiplu amate tiegħu John permanenti hemmhekk, qal lil ommu, ““mara, hawn hu ibnek.”” Imbagħad lil John Huwa qal, ““Hawn hu ommok.”” L-Iskrittura tgħid minn dak il-jum il quddiem john ħa l-Omm Beatu fid-dar tiegħu (Ġw 19:25).

Meta Marija Madalena rrappurtati lill-dixxipli li hija kienet rat l-Kristu tela, John u Peter dam għall-qabar. Għalkemm John outran Pietru u waslu hemm l-ewwel, huwa stenniet Pietru li jmorru fl sabiex tiġi rrispettata s-supremazija Pietru. Wara kollox, il-Mulej kien ħatar Pietru l-kap tal-Knisja Tiegħu (Mt 16:18). Meta John ma tidħol fil-qabar vojt u raw li Ġesù ma kienx hemm, hu jemmen li Hu kien tela mill-mejta.

Tradizzjoni tgħidilna li John outlived l-Appostli l-oħra u kien l-isqof ta Efesin. Filwaqt li aħna ma tista tkun assolutament ċert li kiteb l-Epistles ta’ John u l-Ktieb ta Rivelazzjoni, dan huwa l-tradizzjoni li tkun ingħatat lilna u l-aktar ċertament tidher probabbli.

lezzjonijiet

Fl-Iskrittura, Ġesù darba imsemmi John u ħuh, James, li kien ukoll Appostlu, bħala l-Sons ta Thunder. X’aktarx Ġesù qal dan b’referenza għad-dikjarazzjonijiet raxx tagħhom jew bidla fir malajr. Wara l-infiq tliet snin mal-Mulej, madankollu, John deher li tilfu ħafna ta dak rashness u pridefulness, u kienet saret pjuttost umli. Eżempju wieħed ta umiltà tiegħu huwa meta hu stenniet Pietru biex jidħlu fil-qabar quddiemu.

talb

San Ġwann, dixxiplu amate ta Ġesù, nitolbu għalina biex ikunu docile dawk li għalihom l-Mulej poġġa fil awtorità fuq magħna, iżda b’ħeġġa min fl-imħabba tagħna u tas-servizz lil Alla. Fl-isem Ġesù Kristu, aħna nitolbu. Amen.

St John die apostel
John_Evangelist

Amen.
